Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Flooring Installation

in Savannah, GA

Savannah Premium Wood Flooring has been installing, repairing, and refinishing wood floors in the Savannah, GA area for over 20 years! Luxury vinyl plank flooring has changed significantly over the past decade. The LVP products available today — rigid core SPC (stone plastic composite) and WPC (wood plastic composite) construction, with wear layers ranging from 6 to 22 mils and photographic layers that replicate wood grain with accuracy that was not possible ten years ago — are a legitimate flooring choice for applications where hardwood is either technically inappropriate or economically impractical. In Savannah's climate, where humidity averages above 70 percent through the summer months and moisture intrusion through slab foundations and crawlspaces is a persistent management issue, LVP performs in conditions that would compromise solid hardwood. According to the Floor Covering Industry Association, LVP is now the fastest-growing flooring category in the United States, accounting for over 20 percent of total flooring sales by volume — a shift driven by genuine performance advantages rather than marketing.

LVP is not a substitute for hardwood in every application, and we are direct about that distinction with every customer. In a home with original heart pine floors throughout, installing LVP in a single room creates a transition that does not work aesthetically or materially. In a new construction home on a concrete slab in Pooler where the homeowner wants a wood-look floor in a high-traffic kitchen, mudroom, and laundry corridor — LVP is often the correct specification. The right product for any application depends on subfloor type, moisture conditions, traffic demands, and how the flooring needs to transition to adjacent materials. We assess all of those variables before making a recommendation.

LVP Flooring Installation Services We Provide

Floating LVP Installation

Floating installation is the most common method for rigid core LVP — planks lock together at the click-lock joint and float as a single unit over an underlayment layer without adhesive or mechanical fastening to the subfloor. Floating LVP can be installed over concrete, existing vinyl, existing tile, and wood subfloors in sound condition, provided the subfloor is flat to within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. The primary installation requirement is subfloor flatness — rigid core LVP does not conform to subfloor variation the way flexible sheet vinyl does, and high or low spots telegraph through the finished surface and cause click-lock joint stress over time. We assess and prepare the subfloor before any LVP installation begins.

Glue-Down LVP Installation

Flexible LVP products and some commercial-grade rigid core products are installed using full-spread adhesive rather than a floating method. Glue-down LVP produces a floor with no movement underfoot, eliminates the hollow sound sometimes associated with floating installations, and performs better under heavy rolling loads from commercial furniture and equipment. It is the preferred installation method for commercial applications and for residential installations where the floating method's acoustic characteristics are a concern. Glue-down requires a clean, flat subfloor and appropriate adhesive selection for the specific product and subfloor combination.

LVP Installation Over Concrete Slab

Concrete slab installation is one of LVP's strongest performance advantages over hardwood. SPC and WPC rigid core products are dimensionally stable and impervious to moisture from below — they do not absorb water and do not swell or cup from moisture vapor transmission the way wood-core products do. For Savannah homes on slab foundations throughout Pooler, Richmond Hill, and the Southside, LVP over slab eliminates the moisture vapor testing and mitigation requirements that hardwood installation demands. Subfloor flatness requirements still apply — concrete slabs that exceed the 3/16-inch-over-10-feet tolerance require grinding and leveling before installation.

Stair LVP Installation

LVP stair installation requires specific stair nosing profiles and waterfall or cap-and-band installation methods depending on the stair construction type. Waterfall installation wraps the LVP over the stair nose and down the riser face — a contemporary look appropriate for open-riser staircases and modern interiors. Cap-and-band installation uses a separate stair nosing piece that caps the tread edge and provides a defined transition to the riser. We assess stair construction type and recommend the appropriate installation method before work begins.

LVP Transition and Trim Installation

Transitions between LVP and adjacent flooring types — hardwood, tile, carpet — require specific transition profiles selected for the height differential and the flooring types on each side. T-moldings, reducers, end caps, and threshold profiles are selected and installed as part of every LVP job. Transition installation is one of the areas where LVP jobs most commonly look unprofessional when done without attention to detail — the wrong profile, an uneven reveal, or a transition that rocks underfoot undermines the finished appearance of an otherwise well-installed floor.

Commercial LVP Installation

Commercial LVP installation in Savannah's retail, restaurant, and office market requires product specifications appropriate for the traffic category — light commercial, heavy commercial, or hospitality — and installation methods that meet the demands of the specific use. We specify commercial-grade products with wear layers of 20 mils or greater for high-traffic applications, use glue-down installation methods for commercial environments, and schedule installation around operating hours to minimize business disruption.

Types of Properties We Serve

New Construction Slab Homes

The majority of new residential construction in Pooler, Richmond Hill, and Savannah's Southside neighborhoods is slab-on-grade, and LVP is one of the most specified flooring products in that construction segment. Builders and homeowners choosing LVP for new construction slab homes get a dimensionally stable, moisture-resistant product that installs efficiently over prepared concrete and requires less subfloor prep than hardwood in most cases. We work with builders and individual homeowners on new construction LVP installation and handle slab preparation as part of the installation scope.

High-Moisture Interior Areas

Kitchens, mudrooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms are the interior areas in Savannah homes where moisture exposure makes hardwood a risk and LVP a reasonable specification. LVP's 100 percent waterproof surface layer handles spill exposure, pet accidents, and the localized humidity of cooking and laundry environments without swelling, staining, or finish failure. For homeowners who want a consistent floor material throughout the home including wet areas, LVP in moisture-exposed rooms with hardwood in adjacent living areas is a workable combination when the transition height differential is managed correctly.

Rental and Investment Properties

Savannah's rental property market — from SCAD-area student housing to long-term family rentals in Midtown and Southside neighborhoods — benefits from LVP's combination of durability and repairability. Individual planks can be replaced without refinishing the entire floor when damage is localized, wear layer thickness of 12 mils or greater provides meaningful resistance to the scuffs, scratches, and furniture drag marks common in rental environments, and LVP's waterproof surface eliminates the risk of moisture damage from tenant-caused spills that would require hardwood repair or replacement. For investment property owners managing flooring costs across multiple units, LVP is a legitimate operational choice.

Commercial Retail and Restaurant Spaces

Savannah's commercial corridors — Broughton Street, River Street, the City Market area, and the growing Starland District retail scene — include retail and restaurant spaces where wood-look flooring is aesthetically appropriate but hardwood installation over concrete subfloors presents technical and maintenance challenges. Commercial-grade LVP with appropriate wear layer specifications handles the foot traffic of retail and restaurant environments, tolerates the cleaning protocols required in food service settings, and installs over concrete without the moisture testing requirements that hardwood demands.

What Our Customers are Saying

"We built a new home in Richmond Hill on a slab and wanted a wood-look floor throughout. We'd heard mixed things about LVP but Savannah Premium Wood Flooring walked us through the product options honestly — what the differences between SPC and WPC actually mean, why wear layer thickness matters, and what to expect from each product in terms of how it looks and feels underfoot. We ended up with a wide plank SPC product that looks genuinely like wood and has held up perfectly through two years of kids and dogs."

— Kevin and Sarah M., Richmond Hill, GA

"We own a restaurant in the City Market area and needed to replace the floor in the dining room without shutting down for more than a weekend. They specified a commercial-grade LVP with a 20-mil wear layer, handled the installation over the concrete subfloor Friday night through Sunday, and we opened Monday with a floor that looked exactly right for the space. No downtime beyond what we'd planned and the product has held up under heavy restaurant traffic for over a year."

— Marcus T., Downtown Savannah, GA

"I manage twelve rental units in Midtown and switched to LVP for all of my unit turnovers three years ago after one too many hardwood refinishing bills. Savannah Premium Wood Flooring has installed it in eight units now and the product they spec holds up better than I expected under rental use. Individual plank replacement when tenants damage a section is simple and cost-effective. It was the right call for the portfolio."

LVP Flooring Installation FAQs

What is the difference between SPC and WPC luxury vinyl plank?

SPC stands for stone plastic composite — the core layer contains limestone powder and PVC, producing an extremely dense, rigid plank that is highly resistant to denting and temperature fluctuation. WPC stands for wood plastic composite — the core contains a foamed polymer layer that is slightly softer and quieter underfoot than SPC but less resistant to indentation from heavy furniture and point loads. SPC is the better specification for high-traffic commercial applications and for homes with radiant heat or significant temperature swings. WPC is more comfortable underfoot for long periods and is appropriate for residential applications where traffic demands are moderate. Both are 100 percent waterproof.

What wear layer thickness do I need?

Wear layer thickness determines how resistant the floor is to scratches, scuffs, and surface abrasion. For residential applications with light to moderate traffic, 12 mils is the practical minimum. Homes with dogs, high foot traffic, or active children should specify 20 mils or greater. Commercial applications should use nothing less than 20 mils, with 28 mils or greater for hospitality and heavy retail environments. Wear layer thickness is the single most important specification variable in LVP selection — products with 6 to 8 mil wear layers are sold at lower price points but will show surface wear within two to three years under normal residential use.

Can LVP be installed over existing flooring?

Floating LVP can be installed over existing vinyl, existing tile, and existing hardwood that is flat, sound, and firmly adhered — provided the added floor height does not create transition problems at doorways, appliances, or adjacent flooring. The subfloor flatness requirement still applies: any high or low spots in the existing surface need to be addressed before LVP goes over it. Glue-down LVP requires removal of existing flooring to ensure proper adhesive bond.

How does LVP hold up in Savannah's heat and humidity?

Rigid core SPC and WPC products are dimensionally stable across a temperature range of approximately 50°F to 100°F — well within the range of interior conditions in Savannah's climate. LVP should not be installed in spaces that are not climate-controlled, including unfinished sunrooms, screened porches, or garages without HVAC. Direct sunlight exposure through windows can cause localized temperature buildup that exceeds product tolerances in extreme cases — UV-blocking window film reduces this risk in sun-exposed rooms.

Is LVP a good long-term investment compared to hardwood?

LVP and hardwood serve different purposes and should be evaluated differently. Hardwood floors — particularly original heart pine and longleaf pine in Savannah's historic homes — appreciate in value, can be refinished multiple times over a century of use, and contribute meaningfully to appraised home value. LVP has a functional lifespan of 15 to 25 years depending on wear layer and traffic, cannot be refinished when the wear layer is exhausted, and does not contribute to appraised home value the way hardwood does. In applications where hardwood is technically appropriate, hardwood is the better long-term investment. In applications where moisture conditions, subfloor type, or budget make hardwood impractical, quality LVP is a sound functional choice.
